May 30 - June 1, 2014 Review by Inna Schoeler Here was another first year show for me... I guess this was my year to venture out and try new events! Well to begin with, the location was great! Set right in the downtown area you just can't beat the customer traffic. The bad news is that it is much harder to set up. Everything has to be carried into the park. If you're by yourself or if your work is heavy this of course presents a real problem. Luckily there are plenty of volunteers and I was assigned two strong young boys who hauled everything right to my space in just a few minutes. This was a real treat when I had expected to have to carry everything myself. If you do want to transport your own work that is fine too... but make sure you bring a dolly or hand cart as you'll need it. Parking is a real dilemma too. Unless you plan on getting to the show at 7:00am each day and then souring the entire downtown area to find that elusive free parking spot... just plan on spending $20.00 per day to park your vehicle. The spaces are very limited and even at $20.00 you'll have to make sure you arrive early. The park itself is full of trees and of course those trees have lot of roots to you'll have to make some consideration for that potential problem too. Very little sits flat and those roots can even cause a potential safety problem inside your booth. It's not an insurmountable problem but it is one you should be aware of. Some spaces on the other hand were very open and had a lot of sun. Not that one was better than another... it's just the luck of the draw which one you get. Well now I'm all set up... I've had my equipment hauled into the park... I've compensated for the roots in my booth and I'm ready to sell! Unfortunately on the first day mother nature had another idea. It rained... and it rained... and it rained some more! We were completely flooded the first day. In fact after being swamped under about two feet of water the show was called off early so everyone could collect themselves and make room for the lifeboats. Luckily this was the only day with rain... and surprisingly up until the show was closed I was actually making good sales. The next day the sun came out and sales were better yet! It's amazing how much easier it is to work with customers when you don't have to deal with all that water! In the end it was a good show with nice customers and I anticipate a lot of repeat sales when I come again. The potential of rain is a fact of life when you do an outdoor show so always be prepared to deal with it. I made enough money to definitely plan on returning another year. This is a nice, unique, upscale market that I enjoyed... and even though we had to face some adversity during the event, the staff couldn't have provided more hospitality or help to overcome the problems we encountered. Certainly no one wants to lose sales to rain but who can predict that? But by the same token, the staff had the good sense to close the show when it was apparent that action was in the best interest of every one. In Mid-October, the market moves inside the Velvet Mill in the back room closest to Meadow Avenue. The Stonington Farmers� Market began in 1997 under the initiative of Geoffrey Little. The enormously popular market attracts residents from the Borough and surrounding communities who come to buy fresh, healthy, local food. In 2008 the Stonington Farmers� Market became a year-round event, moving inside during the winter months. Items sold at the market include locally grown vegetables and fruits, jams, a variety of breads, pies and baked goods, cheese, eggs, poultry, meat, seafood, Italian ices, maple syrup, honey, and flowers. Thanks to greenhouses, our farmers are able to offer a selection of fresh produce throughout the winter.
